The Highfield Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics at Level 2 equips learners with essential mathematical skills for work, education, and everyday life. This qualification supports progression to further study and can be taken as a standalone course or part of a broader programme. Learners complete two mandatory components: Non-Calculator and Calculator written examinations, which assess their ability to represent, analyse, and interpret numbers, geometry, and statistics in real-life contexts.
Assessment
Mathematics examinations are available on-demand in both on-screen and paper-based formats, and learners benefit from complimentary access to online resources and practice papers. Mathematics examinations are available on-demand in either on-screen or paper-based format.
Practice Examinations
Our practice examinations are available to support learners in their preparation for their examination of functional skills and are available in both paper-based and on-screen formats. On-screen practice examinations help learners to familiarise themselves with the various features of the system such as how to navigate through the exam and text formatting options.
To access the on-screen mock exams, please visit https://www.highfieldcore.com/ and select ‘Mock Exams’. Guidance and tutorials on how to use the system are included.
The duration of the course is 6 weeks including teaching delivery and assessment.

- Objectives | AssessmentFunctional Skills Mathematics qualification at level 2: indicates that learners can demonstrate their ability in mathematical skills and their ability to apply these, through appropriate reasoning and decision making, to solve realistic problems of increasing complexity; introduces learners to new areas of life and work so that they are exposed to concepts and problems which, while not of immediate concern, may be of value in later life; and enables learners to develop an appreciation of the role played by mathematics in the work of work and in life generally. The qualification consists of ONE mandatory component and is assessed by an externally set examination (paper-based or on-screen) that consists of two parts: 1. the Calculator Test 2. the Non-calculator Test. Marks from the two parts are combined and the result (pass/fail) will be released using the combined mark from both parts of the examination. Each part of the examination requires learners to demonstrate underpinning knowledge skills and problem-solving techniques in realistic settings as determined by a set of subject content.0
